The Budonetto dei Conti Maurigi Estate is on a strip of land belonging to the Piazza Armerina district. The baglio, or quadrangle structure overlooking a courtyard from the 15th century monastery, is immersed in pastures and fruit and olive groves. The terrain was never utilised for vine growing before due to the peculiar microclimate conditions, location and exposure which made growing diffi cult. In 1996 Francesco Maurigi followed his intuition that it was precisely this complexity of the territory that might foster quality vine cultivation, and so he created a winery and planted non-native vines. In 1998 Francesco Maurigi defi ned the oenological, structural and process lay out by planting international vines such as Pinot Nero and Viognier, steering the company towards a direction in quality with traditional methods. In just a few short years Maurigi has become one of the most important Sicilian wine companies.
