La Solatia: creative whites from Ruffino
Siena
Magazine: August 2007
Immersed in the rolling Sienese hills a few kilometres from Monteriggioni on the Via Francigena, the La Solatìa estate was chosen by Ruffi no because the territory north of Siena offered the perfect qualities necessary for specialised white wine production. La Solatìa became part of the Tenimenti Ruffi no in 1994, a group consisting of 7 estates in Tuscany boasting 1500 hectares 600 of which are vines. La Solatia was created for making Tuscan wines from non traditional vines, especially elegant, pleasant and well structured bouquets. The 93 hectares are almost entirely planted with Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio, with a small percentage of Viognier and Sangiovese. “We have dedicated 25 years to this project “explains Luigi Folonari, “especially in pinpointing the location for the perfect terrain for the Ruffi no production. Then we concentrated our efforts on accomplishing high quality threading”. Pinot Grigio, with its fruity bouquet and refi ned taste, and Libaio, a strong white with a great future, follow the same philosophy.
