And the river fl ows…
Valeggio sul Mincio (VR)
Nel verde Magazine: November 2007
Veneto. Far away from the usual itineraries, on the border of Lombardy and Veneto history, nature, legends and fl avours are swirled together in the River Mincio.
Valeggio, in the amphitheatre of the green Morenic hills, land of ancient battles between the Scaligeri and Gonzaga clans make, together with Borghetto, a splendid example of a fortifi ed medieval system. Follow the river to Villa Maffei, sumptuous summerhouse of the Counts of Valeggio since 1649, that has hosted personalities such as Carlo Alberto, Radetzky and Napoleon III, then delve into the beauties of the Parco Giardino, bought from Carlo Sigurtà and transformed into the most stunning botanical garden in Europe. The famous tortellini of Valeggio are a gourmet product typical of the ‘Lombardy-Veneto’ border region, knotted sheets of wafer thin silk-like pasta to be savoured while breathing in the unique atmosphere of the Mincio River.
