The Gerrei landscape is dominated by woods that are strictly Mediterranean. The intense green of the Holmoaks and the wild olives plus, the majestic trunks of the cork-oaks are the fi rst sensations that strike the visitor. Plateaus of balsa wood trees, called “jars” alternate with deep valleys around the basin of the Flumendosa, north east of Cagliari. On the surrounding hills at Escalaplano, Silius and Armungia cultivated areas of well-tended olives extend close to vineyards and almond groves. At the end of February the almonds bloom with a rose coloured livery of delicate fl owers that fi ll the air with a sweet perfume. The Gerrei area is the perfect location for trekking also offering lots of occasions for fl ora and fauna fans.
