American Impressionist
Added on September 2007
John Sargent moved confidently and easily around Venice. The American artist, born in Florence in 1856, knew every nook and cranny. After visiting it for the first time at age 14, he was often to return over the next 40 years and more. John Sargent - a serene, generous, refined and kindly man - loved Venice deeply. The city suspended between sea and sky was the perfect subject to savour “The pleasure of translating the visual experience into brushstrokes on paper”. His undisputed talent enabled him to paint Venice in a new way, far from traditional representations. Indeed, his perspectives are dynamic and illuminated by instant iridescent light.
