Drifting through the narrow streets of Sligo and Mayo counties in the northwestern part of the island one admires pleasant scenery that seemingly walked off the palette of an 1800’s painter. The sites are connected to the poet William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) buried in the cemetery of the Drumcliffe monastery at the feet of the spectacular Mount Benbulden. Not far from here, inside the huge park one can stop at the Lissadell House constructed in the fi rst half of the 1800’s by Sir Robert Gore-Booth. This austere and massive residence (in the small photo) contrasts with the charm of the surrounding countryside and the superb elegance of the interior. Yeats was a frequent guest here being a great friend to the Gore-Booth sisters, Eva the poet and Constance a revolutionary.
