As beautiful as art
Saint Paul de Vence - France
Magazine: November 2007
France. Just a few kilometres from Nice, Saint Paul de Vence is entrenched on a hill in viewing distance of the Alps and the Mediterranean.
Because of its position and quality of colours, starting in the ‘20s, the village attracted art giants who came to live and paint immersed in nature: Matisse, Bonnard, Modigliani, and most noted, Chagall. Commune for painters, but also for literature and cinema personalities - from Sartre to Yves Montand - Saint Paul de Vence became an important centre for art enthusiasts. Its little cobbled streets are strewn with atelier, galleries, and craft workshops. Then there are religious sites: from the Rosary Chapel, decorated by Matisse, to the Colombe d’Or, at one time a favourite rendezvous among artists. Also not to be missed, the Maeght Foundation, where paintings, sculpture, and drawings signed by famous names are exhibited.
