Summer in Maremma It is not the architecture that draws one to the Maremma region, rather the vast expanses of untamed land dotted with herds of drifting cattle, the solitary bays where deer and fawn graze and the densely shaded woodlands. The tourist itinery starts at Grosseto. Following the coast northwards, past Castiglione della Pescaia and Scarlino, we arrive in Follonica facing the Isle of Elba. Cradled between the gulf with its relaxing coasts and the pinewoods that offer a more active alternative to beach life: mountain bike trails, horse riding, hill walks or intrepid trekking along the Macchia Mediterranea. History and art lovers will appreciate this region as the starting point for visiting medieval sites entrenched in the vicinity. City wise, one is spoilt for choice: stroll through the art galleries in the Pinacoteca “Modigliani” or discover the Museo del Ferro. Summer in Maremma

Entering from the Porta San Martino we face the Roman San Martino church. Its bell, forged in 1625 and detached during the war in1944, is still conserved inside. Magliano is famous for a gourmet convention “Vinellando” that takes place from 24- 26 August a showcase for the esteemed red Morellino di Scansano.
